The Uppsala Student Union (Uppsala Studentkår) and the Doctoral Board (Doktorandnämnden) at Uppsala University call on the government of Sweden to withdraw its decision to increase political control over the boards of the Swedish universities. The government must restore the terms of office to three years and make it clear that they intend to return to the order where current political issues do not govern the selection of the university’s members. Academic freedom requires freedom from political control as well as trust between academia and those in power. The recent decisions of the government threaten both of these values.
